10 Ways to Get Out of a Rut
Two years ago, I found myself in yet another job that offered no personal satisfaction. Different faces, different digs, but I felt that same old “blah” about the whole ordeal. Had this been the first, second or even third time to experience such a lack of enthusiasm, I would have thought a career change was in order but considering that this had been going on for years, it was obvious the problem rested somewhere else.
Maybe its me?
It was. And with good reason. Most of the things about my life weren’t there because of goals or well-laid plans. Quite the contrary - my life was a big compilation of “the way things turned out”. As a result, my life was happening “to me” instead of “because of me” and I had become a passive observer in the entire process.
So, I decided to shake things up. If there’s one way to get your blood flowing again, its to introduce a little change into your hum-drum routine. What kind of change, you ask? Here’s ten ideas to get you out of a rut and back into the driver’s seat.
- Pierce something. Okay, maybe this sounds a little extreme but for my thirtieth birthday, I gave myself a navel ring. Why? Who the hell knows but I have to say I absolutely loved it. It was my little private, personal piece of rebellion, especially for a 30 year-old mom who wore suits and glasses and sat behind a desk all day. So, extreme? Maybe. But boring? Never.
- Move to the country. Or the city if you already call the “boonies” your home. The point of change is to gain a new perspective and there’s no better way than to literally do just that. Take what you know, set it aside and experience life from a completely different point of view.
- Cut your hair. Or change the color or buy those funky clothes you like but aren’t quite sure if they’re “you”. Not all change requires a complete upheaval - sometimes, just altering your appearance can help you see things in a different light.
- Take a road trip. Remember when you would load up the car and just take off on a moments notice? Try it again. Load up your friends or your family or your dog, grab a map and start driving. Go somewhere you’ve never been and be as “touristy” as you possibly can.
- Quit your job. Is it really so hard? No, not really. You just walk into your boss and say “I quit”. Is it scary? Absolutely, which is what makes it worthy of this list. What will you do for money? Well, that all depends… what do you want to do for money? We all talk about breaking out and doing that “thing” we always dreamed of doing. So, here’s your chance. Figure out what it is you want to do and then just do it.
- Go back to school. One of the quickest ways to realize that there’s more to the world than your little corner is to browse a college catalog. The classes are endless and if you’re like me, you’ll end up wanting to take almost everything they offer. Don’t worry about credits or degree plans - just take what strikes you and have fun with it.
- Do something that no one would ever believe you’d do.Take riding lessons. Go skydiving. Buy a motorcycle and learn to ride it. Start ice skating on weekends or rock climbing on your vacations. Pick that “wouldn’t that be cool” thing that no one, including yourself would ever believe you’d actually do… and then go do it.
- Paint. Or draw or sculpt or whatever strikes your fancy. There is nothing more liberating and “freeing” than to let your creative juices flow. Yes… you have creative juices whether you know it or not. You don’t have to be Picasso or Michaelangelo to put brush to canvas and who knows? You might just be surprised at what you produce.
- Take up piano. Or learn to play the guitar. The flute, the oboe or that big, flashy drumset at the music store down the street. Playing an instrument is a wonderful way to make those little neurons in your brain start connecting again - so much so, that many doctors recommend it as a way to ward off Alzheimer’s. Your rut is nothing more than a mind and spirit bored with its surroundings. Spark the mind and the spirit will follow.
- Have sex. Yes, sex. Passionate, steamy, sweaty sex. I’m not talking about the 3 minute, lights out obligatory kind - I’m talking about the holy cow, that was amazing, give me a minute or two to catch my breath stuff. Sex is good for you. It flexes the muscles, it stretches the body and it raises your heart rate. It causes your skin to glow, your mind to relax and your toes to curl. And come on… anything that makes your toes curl has got to be worth a second look, don’t you think?

Thank you, Kate. What was that quote I just heard…Change will lead to insight far more often than insight will lead to change.–Milton Erickson

This post put a smile on my face - thanks for the great read. The less adventurous types (but you may even enjoy it, even though it doesn’t compare to piercing) may enjoy the book This Book Will Change Your Life by Benrik. It challenges you to do what your normally wouldn’t - like slyly black out an important word in a library book.
