When I first set out to write for a living, I found breaking in to be a little daunting. Of course, this was before the Internet (yes, I’m dating myself here, I know) and much of my time was spent sending proposals out to magazine editors and publishing houses, only to wait in limbo for an obligatory response.
Nowadays however, becoming a full-time writer has never been easier and instead of waiting months for editors to respond, I make a comfortable living as a freelance writer. Granted, you still need to have a knack with words but beyond that, there’s plenty of ways to start earning dollars for your work. How, you might be wondering? Here’s some of my best resources for writing for cash:
- Blogging. This probably goes without saying but if you’re not blogging, you’re missing out. There are actually different ways to make money from blogging but they all revolve around writing’s first rule of thumb: write what you know. Pick a topic, any topic that you’re really interested in and then build a blog around it. Having tried out some different blogging platforms, I recommend Wordpress for the simple reason that its free, its easy and you can really customize it to make it your own. Besides an eye-catching design and tons of quality content (that’s a must), you have a couple of options for monetizing your blog.
The first is affiliate programs and there are literally thousands of them to choose from. You can sign up with places like Clickbank, Commission Junction and Linkshare to have a one-stop shop for a variety of affiliate programs or you can go out and sign up for individual programs separately. Or, if you’re feeling really ambitious, you can do both. Place the affiliate banners and ads on your blog (strategically, of course) and then you earn commission when someone spends money after clicking through one of your links.
The second way to turn your blog into cash is to sell advertising space. Now, if your blog is brand new, that may be hard to do at first but there’s nothing that says you can’t go ahead and throw the offer out there. The ads would then be placed much like your affiliate ads, only you’d be paid directly for the space instead of waiting for someone to click.
One of the most popular ways to monetize a blog is to sign up for Google’s AdSense. This works similar to an affiliate program except that you just place the AdSense code on your site and Google funnels the ads for you.
Nope, we’re not done yet. You can also make a little cash from donations. Yep, donations. People will actually donate to sites that they feel serve a “higher good” so if you’re really pumping out some quality content (I told you it was a “must”!), then don’t be surprised when your readers want to help support your site. To facilitate donations, you can set up a PayPal button for instant (and secure) payments.
- Writing For Someone Else’s Blog. If you’re not comfortable setting up your own blog or maybe just want to broaden your horizons, you can write for someone else, preferably a blog that already has the traffic to generate some cash. A good example of this would be About.com - I’ve been writing for About since 2002 and I have to say its one of the best gigs you could ever have. About pays their “guides” a base amount plus a formulated bonus that’s based on growing page views. You’ll have to find a topic that’s open and then you have to apply and be accepted but if you get in, you definitely won’t regret it.
Other blogs that are frequently looking for writers include b5media, Weblogs, Suite101 and Simply Good Media. But that’s by no means a comprehensive list - there are tons of blogs out there - and I mean tons - that hire bloggers on a regular basis so keep your eyes open and start checking out the various job boards on the web.
- Write for someone else. Writing for cash isn’t limited to blogging. Quite the contrary, you can write for ad agencies, pet stores, pharmaceutical companies and clothing retailers. You can make money by producing web content, newsletters, product descriptions and even e-books. The secret is knowing how to find your clients.
Luckily, the web comes to the rescue once again and provides us with a number of services that connect writers to potential buyers. The best of these is Elance, a wonderful service that has plenty of projects to keep you busy. Bid on a project you’re qualified for and if your bid is chosen, you’ve got the gig!
Other similar services include Guru and Get A Freelancer.
- E-books. And last but certainly not least, are e-books. You’ve always wanted to write that best-seller - well, here’s your chance. E-books are a great way to supplement your online income, especially if you write some really good ones and promote them very well. Write your copy in a word processing system, give it a nice cover and then turn it into a PDF using PDF995 (its free). You can use E-Junkie to handle the download/payment process - they charge a measley $5 bucks per month for up to 10 digital products making this one of the best resources your online venture ever saw.
And there you have it. Four wonderful ways to start your writing career and you don’t even have to leave the house to do it. Just remember that establishing yourself in any field takes time, patience and lots of good word-of-mouth so keep at it and keep writing. The dollars will start to flow sooner than you think
If you don’t know how to write for a web and want to money then the best way is to make your own website and write for your own website. But first you have do domain name registration from any good web host providers. If you don’t know how to do it then you can take help from domain register review. After this write and make web pages for your site along with SEO keywords. This will help you to improve your website page ranking and will also helps in affiliate marketing campaigns. Many companies use Adsense, Adwords kind of affiliate program to attack customers towards their website. Another such program is pay per click ppc, which also helps in increase your website traffic. If you don’t know how to implement such programs then internet affiliate marketing reviewor online articles can be of great help.
