I ran across this while surfing for something else after finding something else that was different from the original “something” I was originally surfing for.

Which is usually how “surfing” goes, isn’t it? You start out looking for a layman’s explanation for calculating prime factorization and through a series of clicks, end up on a website that features the latest in kinky sex toys. Oh, don’t give me that look - you know you’re curious about the prime factorization too :)

And it occurs to me that this is how life is too. You start out with plans for a big corner office only to discover along the way that you really like the view from the window in your home office better. You venture outside to water your plants and end up shooting hoops with your kids instead. Even today, I headed down the hall to start the laundry but my daughter’s room caught my eye on the way. Wouldn’t her room work better if the bed was over here? I could move the dresser over there - that would give her more floor space to play. And the damage was done… the laundry never made it into the washing machine.

My husband calls it an inability to focus. I on the other hand, see it as an instinctive ability to see the proverbial forest while still acknowledging the trees. Okay, maybe there is a hint of attention deficit there but rather than fight it, I prefer to think of it as “going with the flow”.

Which brings me to the point of this post (yes, there is a point): the “this” that I mentioned earlier is a wonderful little series of thoughts compiled by Lance Arthur on 43 Folders but originating from Leslie Harpold, a writer who I didn’t realize I liked so much until now.

Leslie died in December of 2006 but she apparently passed along some wonderful wisdom along the way. Wisdom about life, about clothing and about getting the most from the simple things. And although Leslie appears to have been much more organized than I, I’m betting she too had a knack for finding the forest.

So, go read Lance’s post (there’s 4 so be sure not to miss one). Absorb them. Think them over. And apply Leslie’s little lessons to your own life. And then if you’re as entranced as I was, you can read more about Leslie here.
